Akel, Logan, Shafer was responsible for planning, design, an construction administration for The Florida Army National Guard Aviation Center which includes the Army Aviation Support Facility No. 1 and two armory buildings for the 1stBattalion, 111thAviation Regiment. These buildings were constructed by the United States Navy and decommissioned as part of the closure of Cecil Field Naval Air Station. These buildings, which sit on 31 acres of land, were provided by the City of Jacksonville for use by the Guard when they relocated from their former home at Craig Field.
The AASF, at 114,000 square feet, is the second largest in the nation and has the ability to house 18 AH-64A Apache helicopters and four OH-58 Reconnaissance and Air Interdiction Detachment (RAID) Counter Drug Program aircraft. This facility is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that enhances the safety and efficiency of daily aviation operations. It includes two 40-foot overhead cranes, remote control surveillance cameras, boundary fence security sensors, and a separate outside hazardous materials and ammunition storage building. The Avionics and Armament shops have specialty power for testing Aircraft Survivability equipment. The hanger contains built-in power supplies for each aircraft making it possible to bring aircraft systems on-line and operational without the use of auxiliary manual power support systems. All buildings are protected with automatic fire suppression systems.
